ABBOTSBURY ~ "The Appreciation" Revisited

Our project published this book in 2006 with the aid of a grant from "Awards for All". The original "Appreciation of Abbotsbury" was a study prepared for the Ilchester Estate in 1973 as part of a sweeping development scheme for the village: part of that book was a house-by-house description of the entire village, with photographs of every house.

The 2006 book retraced the steps of the original book, photographing each building afresh from - as far as possible - the original viewpoint. With the help of Abbotsbury residents, it gave details of the ways in which the buildings described in 1973 had changed, and added "now and then" photographs of the new buildings that had gone up in the intervening 30 years, and included a map of all the changes.

What this version of the book does is to continue the story into 2007 and beyond ~ you'll find an aphabetical list below of all the buildings described in the 2006 book. To find out more about any of them, click on the one that interests you to go to a page with the 2007 description, and anything that we have been able to add to it. It's constantly changing !

If you want to add anything, please contact AHRP, or email Nigel Melville on ~ suenigel@wheelwrights.co.uk

Developments since the 1973 "Appreciation of Abbotsbury"

"Abbotsbury is a changing village ... To freeze it in aspic would deny the village the chance to develop to accommodate that change. Yet, to allow the beauty of the village to be slowly eroded would be to remove one of its principal strengths. The Strangways Estate have shown that there is a third way."
