Furlongs Homestead

(Scheduled in the 1974 Village Plan as a building which the Secretary of State had agreed to include in the statutory list)

The 2003 Conservation Plan for the Abbey site describes this as "a post-Enclosure homestead/farm re-located to the periphery of the village after re-apportionment of land, possibly positioned deliberately to obscure view of sunset from Abbey House." Sad to think that grudges could extend that far, but the authors of the Plan don't seem to have been joking. They also suggest that, while it pre-dates the 1814 Enclosure survey, the barn comes from that era, implying that it was built in the early 1800s, with other parts of the farm added later in the 19th century. The homestead, they add, is almost completely free of 20th century additions. It currently has planning permission for development as a training centre for hand-crafted furniture makers.
