

Before they were garages, these buildings were apparently stables for the farm that was based on a combination of 2 Back Street and 20 Market Street. According to the 1920s postcard below, the buildings were thatched when they were stables: a later postcard (also from Dave Stevens' collection) shows that the thatch had been replaced by corrugated iron in the late 1930s.
It seems odd that the nearer gable wall appears to be higher than the roofline in the more recent photograph above compared to the identical roof in the photograph taken in 1973 ~ unless it is an illusion caused by the thickness of the ivy.
