11/13 Back Street

(Spring Cottage)

(Grade II listed in 1956)

This was originally two cottages ~ the door for no.13 can be clearly seen in the left-hand photograph. One villager can remember looking at them with a view to purchase before they were rebuilt as one house; and "rebuilt" is apparently the best word, as the building had to be nearly razed to the ground and built afresh, once the Estate had agreed the design of the windows. The listings register describes the building as 18th century with 20th century reconstruction and renewed refenestration, a reference to the fact that the Estate were keen to keep the traditional cottage style and resist the temptation of the time to put in bigger windows. The house changed hands in 2005.
