Back Street ~ barn (west)

(Unlisted)

This barn and the one to its east now form part of the post-Appreciation house called The Keep.

It was once Albert Stokes' butcher's shop, but as the left-hand photograph below shows, it later became a stable and was originally twice its present size: in the shop's days, the butcher used to smoke hams in the big open fireplace. The map in the Inventory shows what looks like a continuous line of properties between 13 and 15 Back Street, implying that as recently as the 1940's there had been more substantial development here ~ and the right-hand photograph, taken well before the 1940's, confirms that impression.

(Many thanks to Iris Trevett and Dave Stevens for the loan of the two photographs.)
