The Appreciation lists this as a "massive nineteenth century building ... in sharp contrast to the terraces opposite", which sounds negative, but the author adds "the contrast between the two groups of buildings adds to the interest of the scene".
The terrace was built by the 5th Earl of Ilchester to replace earlier, thatched, cottages, a smithy, and the original Swan Inn, after a disastrous fire at the end of the 19th century, and has generally housed workers on the Ilchester Estate, though the stationmaster of the Abbotsbury branch line seems to have lived here at one time.
(Scheduled in the 1974 Village Plan as a building which the Secretary of State had agreed to include in the statutory list)
