THE SWAN INN

(Not listed in 1974, but scheduled to be included)

Not the first pub to bear the name: the original Swan Inn was further down Rodden Row, about where the Abbotsbury Studio now stands.

Graham Roper took over as landlord in 1966: at the time there were two petrol pumps in front of the pub, which he kept for 15 years or so. He rebuilt the skittle alley (where village pantomimes were staged every year) in 1977, using local volunteers as his work force, and the pub never closed during the alterations. Similarly, in 1991, the bar was redecorated by volunteers between 3.00pm and 7.00pm on a Sunday afternoon.

Today, the bar hosts the community computers, and has acted as the base for several courses in basic IT skills, as well as being the home to the Beachcombers fund-raising group, and the village Tourism and Traders Association.
